(2024) Sound design, composition & performance

Texture, in its broadest sense, encompasses the feel of a substance, the consistency of a surface, and the nuanced variations within. ”Justified Interest in Textures” delves into the connection between textures, both audible and visual, and human perception. By synthesizing sound and imagery, the performance creates an immersive experience of augmented perception to explore the intrinsic relationship between texture and human observation by integrating auditory sensations with visual stimuli.

The central focus of the installation is a shallow body of water, set in the middle of a three-channel video feed that captures the changes of the liquid surface caused by the live sound in real-time. The feed is processed and transformed into dynamic visuals, synchronized with the musical composition. The visuals respond to changes in texture, creating a seamless dialogue between the audible and visual realms. Because of the possibility of filming at different frame-rates, the video installation allows the spectator to see and experience the change in textures of water normally not perceivable to the naked eye. By doing so, a dialogue and reflection on the role of textures in shaping our sensory experiences and cultural narratives is stimulated, and the human sense’s limitations of perceiving the world is questioned.
